Restoring Smiles with Veneers

Dentist in Chicago

Dentist in ChicagoAbout 1 in 4 adults in the United States feels embarrassed by the look of their smile. Our dental office is proud to offer porcelain dental veneers to new and existing patients. Our doctor has the training and experience to provide porcelain veneers to patients who wish to restore a whiter, healthier, more even look to their smile.

Porcelain veneers are a cosmetic and restorative dental solution that are designed to mimic the look and feel of natural teeth. Veneers create an immediate improvement in the appearance of a smile. They are a minimally invasive treatment option and can be more cost-effective than many other cosmetic improvement options.

Patients  whose teeth are healthy, but are chipped, cracked, crooked, or mildly stained can benefit from veneers. Patients whose teeth are uneven or have gaps may also find veneers are a great solution for improving the look of their smile.

We offer custom-crafted porcelain veneers that are fitted precisely to cover the front surface of the tooth. Because porcelain is a semi-translucent material, the tooth continues to have a natural healthy appearance with the veneer in place. Veneers are chosen with care to match the natural teeth around them, to ensure optimal aesthetic results.

Once placed, porcelain veneers are a strong, stain-resistant, and long-lasting cosmetic dental solution. However, porcelain dental veneers need ongoing dental care, just like natural teeth. They should be brushed and flossed regularly and normal dental exam and cleaning schedules should be maintained. When cared for properly, veneers can last a lifetime.

There are some additional factors to consider before choosing veneers. First, it is common to experience some sensitivity to hot and cold foods and beverages for a few days following the placement of veneers. This is generally mild and unlikely to last more than about a week.

Second, while porcelain is a strong and durable material, it is recommended to avoid activity that will put great stress on the veneers, such as chewing excessively hard foods or using the teeth to attempt to open a nut or bottle. Finally, any patient who has issues with bruxism (grinding) should discuss this with our doctor before deciding whether to have dental veneers placed.

Oral Cancer Screening Can Save Your Life

Streeterville Chicago Dentist

Dentist in Streeterville Chicago

Our expert dentist wants to remind patients that our office offers thorough oral cancer screenings as part of our comprehensive dental health services. Like with every form of cancer, early diagnosis can have a profound impact on the success of your treatment. Regular screenings are your first line of defense against oral cancer and our doctor is here to help.

In your screening, our doctor will check your lips, tongue, gums, mouth, and throat for any abnormalities that could be or become cancerous. We will give careful consideration to any symptoms you may be experiencing. If you have experienced any oral cancer symptoms for more than a week without improvement, schedule an appointment and tell your dentist immediately. Symptoms that could indicate oral cancer include:

  • Ear pain
  • Unexplained mouth bleeding
  • Mouth sores that don’t heal
  • White or red patches in your mouth
  • Dramatic weight loss
  • Lumps or swellings in or around your mouth
  • Sore throat without other sinus symptoms
  • Sensation of something caught in the back of your throat
  • Pain or difficulty in swallowing, speaking, or moving your jaw or tongue

One adult American dies of oral cancer every hour. Though anyone can develop oral cancer, some factors can increase your risks. Some of the most common risk factors include: genetic predisposition, prolonged sun exposure, unhealthy diet, and excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages. Oral cancer is more common in men than women. Patients with gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) are at increased risk. Users of tobacco in any form are six times more likely to develop oral cancer than non-users.

Whatever the cause, the success of treatment depends on the size, type, and stage of the cancer. Early detection can play a critical role in your successful recovery. When found in early stages, oral cancers have an 80 – 90% survival rate. The primary reason for this is that early detection leads to earlier treatment. Oral cancers that are found in early or precancerous stages can often be removed and require less invasive procedures to treat. Later stages of cancer are likely to be larger and more complex and often have spread far beyond your mouth.

We are accepting new patients. If you would like more information about oral cancers and oral cancer screenings, call our office for a consultation.

Dental Implant Restorations

Dentist in Streeterville Chicago, IL

Streeterville Chicago IL DentistAbout 1 in 4 adults experience tooth loss between the ages of 21 and 30. Dental implants are a safe and long-term option for tooth replacement that improve the appearance and functionality of your smile.

A dental implant can be paired with a replacement crown for single tooth replacement or can be used in small groups to anchor a denture or dental bridge. Dental implants are a strong, long-lasting solution for tooth loss and serve to prevent jaw bone loss in the same manner as a natural tooth root.

There are many benefits to choosing dental implants as a tooth-replacement solution. Some of these include:

  • Natural looking smile: Dental implants are crafted to closely resemble your natural teeth, restoring a natural-looking smile.
  • Improved oral health: Since there is no need to alter surrounding teeth to anchor implants, more of your natural teeth are preserved intact, improving long-term oral health.
  • Improved speech: With removable, non-anchored dentures, teeth can slip within the mouth, causing slurred or mumbled speech. Dental Implants remove that concern.
  • Improved comfort: Dental Implants avoid the slipping and discomfort of removable dentures.
  • Improved function: Dental Implants function like your natural teeth, allowing you to eat without pain.
  • Durability: Dental implants are stable, strong, and stain-resistant.
  • Protect healthy bone structure: Empty spaces caused by tooth loss can, over time, lead to deterioration of the jawbone. Since Dental Implants function like tooth roots, they are able to prevent this type of deterioration, just as natural teeth do.
  • Long-term solution: Dentures must be replaced about every 5-7 years. Dental Implants, when cared for properly, can last a lifetime.

If you are missing one or more teeth, dental implants may be right for you. We will consider your oral and overall health prior to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants. Some considerations include:

  • Adequate bone support to anchor the implant
  • Healthy gum tissue
  • Sinus and nerve location
  • Overall health, including any chronic illnesses

In some cases, we may recommend advance treatment for your upper or lower jaw to enable you to have the bone support needed for implantation. As always, your treatment plan is created based on your specific needs and goals for your healthy smile.

If you are interested in learning more about dental implants or would like to schedule a consultation, contact our office today for an appointment. We’re here to help restore the health and beauty of your smile.

Providing Relief from Periodontal Disease

$

Dentist in Streeterville Chicago, IL

Streeterville Chicago DentistOver 45% of U.S. adults have moderate to severe periodontal disease. Periodontal disease ranges from a mild inflammation of the gum tissues to periodontitis, a major oral disease that can result in soft tissue and bone damage and even tooth loss.  Our experienced dentist is providing periodontal treatments to both new and existing patients who are suffering from any form of periodontal (gum) disease.

One of the major causes of gum disease is practicing poor oral hygiene habits. Daily brushing and flossing and regular professional exams and cleanings are essential to maintaining optimal oral health. When these practices are not followed, plaque can form on the teeth and along the gumline. If this plaque is not properly removed, it may harden over time and become tartar. Once that occurs, only a dental professional can remove the tartar from teeth.

If gum disease is not treated in a timely manner, tartar may continue to build. When this occurs, the gum disease may advance. Gums redden, swell, and become prone to bleeding from normal activities, such as brushing or eating. At this point, professional periodontal treatment is needed to prevent the disease from advancing further.

When periodontal disease is not treated in a timely manner, it may become periodontitis. Periodontitis is the most advanced form of periodontal disease. With periodontitis, gums begin to pull away from the teeth, creating small “pockets” along the gumline. These spaces are highly difficult to clean without professional intervention and can lead to rapid worsening in overall oral health. Without prompt and thorough treatment, bone, gums, and soft tissues may be destroyed by periodontitis. One of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults is periodontal disease.

Some of the most common factors that contribute to periodontal disease developing include poor oral hygiene habits, diabetes, smoking, and female hormonal changes. Some medications can cause gum tissue to develop abnormal tissues, which can increase difficulty in proper cleaning of the teeth. People who are receiving treatment for AIDS are also at increased risk of developing periodontal disease.

Our doctor has the training and experience to diagnose and treat every stage of periodontal disease. If you have symptoms of periodontal disease, contact our office to schedule a consultation. Some symptoms include: chronic halitosis (bad breath), sensitive teeth, red or swollen gums, sensitive or bleeding gums, and difficulty or pain with chewing. Our dentist provides excellent periodontal care for our patients, and welcomes new patient consultations. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact our office.

Look 10 Years Younger

Dentist in Streeterville Chicago

Streeterville Chicago IL DentistYour smile is one of the first things a person will notice when you meet.  If you would like to improve your smile with a simple procedure, teeth whitening may be a great option for you, especially if you have stained, dull or discolored teeth. Our dental office is providing teeth whitening services to new and existing patients.

Regardless of how well you care for your teeth, over time, discoloration will occur.  The main causes of stained teeth are genetics, antibiotics, tobacco and certain foods. As we age, our teeth darken as well. While preventing tooth discoloration is nearly impossible, our experienced team can help reverse the effects of discoloration by helping to create a whiter and brighter smile.

Whether it’s an in-office treatment or at-home treatment, the principles of teeth whitening are the same.  A special whitening agent is applied to the teeth in order to bleach the stains and brighten your smile. Our expert dentist will discuss your whitening needs and goals with you to determine which option is best for you.

In-office teeth whitening is the quickest method to a brighter, whiter smile.  With the supervision of an experienced dental professional, a stronger bleaching solution can be used than with at-home kits. Optimal results are achieved much faster with the professional whitening treatment, and in many ways the results are much better given the nature of the bleaching agents that are used. On average, patients find they appear up to ten years younger just by restoring the bright, white smile of their youth.

During a professional teeth whitening treatment, we will first clean the teeth.  Then we will apply a whitening agent to your teeth, carefully avoiding your gums and soft tissue.  Once applied, a laser light will be directed at the teeth to expedite the process.  For maximum results, the process may be repeated more than once.

If a visit to our office for professional whitening isn’t an option for you, at-home treatment may provide the whitening you need. While you will find a vast variety of at-home teeth whitening products on the market, including whitening toothpastes, over-the-counter gels, rinses, strips, trays and more, we can fit you with custom-made whitening trays that will more accurately fit to your teeth for a more even whitening result.

At-home teeth whitening results are less dramatic compared to those achieved at the dentist. While at-home teeth whitening is easy to use, it is not recommended if your teeth or gums are sensitive.

If you are looking to brighten your smile and look ten years younger, contact our office for more information or to schedule a consultation today.

7 Ways to Get Your Calcium Dairy-Free

Dentist Streeterville Chicago

Calcium is an important mineral for building strong, healthy teeth, but not everyone can tolerate the lactose found in dairy. Lactose is a sugar found in milk and other dairy products. About 65% of people have reduced ability to process lactose past infancy.

If you have difficulty with lactose but want to ensure you are getting the calcium you need, consider one of these non-dairy sources of natural calcium.

  1. Canned seafood, such as sardines and salmon, can be a good source of calcium. These inexpensive options actually contain more calcium than their fresh counterparts. Canned seafood contains small, soft, edible bones that are generally unnoticeable but can be a great way to add calcium to a salad or other dish.
  2. Calcium-fortified juices are available in both orange and cranberry varieties. These juices taste the same as non-fortified options, but contain a substantial amount of calcium. Check the label to ensure it is a calcium-fortified juice.
  3. Soy, rice, and almond milks offer added calcium and can be used as a milk substitute for many dishes. Experiment with different varieties to determine which flavor you like the most for each use. Try one of these milk alternatives on cereal or use in a cooked dish in place of regular milk. Soy, rice, and almond milks are available in a variety of flavors, including plain, sweetened, unsweetened, vanilla, and other options.
  4. Beans are a calcium-rich food. Black-eyed peas and baked beans are particularly high in calcium.
  5. Green vegetables are a good source of natural calcium. Collard, mustard, turnip, and dandelion greens, Chinese cabbage, spinach, kale, okra, and broccoli are all great choices for adding calcium to your diet.
  6. Nuts, such as almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, or Brazil nuts are strong sources of calcium. Flaxseeds and sunflower seeds are a great snack or salad additive with calcium. Almond butter, cashew butter, and pumpkin seed butter are a fun and calcium-rich alternative to peanut butter.
  7. Breakfast cereals are highly fortified with several vitamins and minerals, including calcium. Old-fashioned rolled oatmeal adds calcium to your breakfast as well.

Calcium is important for developing and maintaining strong teeth and bones. If you have trouble with dairy, don’t let that stop you from consuming your recommended amount of daily calcium.

Connected Health: Gum Disease and Heart Disease

Dentist in Streeterville Chicago

Dentist Streeterville ChicagoFor decades, scientists have been studying the links between periodontal (gum) disease and heart disease. Over the years, research has continued to find strong correlations between these two inflammatory conditions. While there is work yet to be done, we have already discovered connections that may influence how we approach health care in the future. Consider a few key components of the gum disease – heart disease relationship.

Gum disease and heart disease share many of the same risk factors. Some of these include smoking, obesity, stress, nutrition, and more. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 70% of Americans aged 65 and older currently have periodontitis – the most advanced form of gum disease. Recent studies have suggested that patients with heart disease may have increased likelihood of developing gum disease as well.

Likewise, gum disease increases your risk of heart disease. This may be due to the higher rates of inflammation in your body that occur with gum disease. If you already have a heart condition, gum disease may worsen your illness. One study published in 2015 noted an increase in the severity of heart attacks in patients with gum disease. Heart disease is currently the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S.

Treating gum disease may decrease your odds of contracting or worsening heart disease. A study published in 2014 found that patients who were treated for gum disease had fewer hospitalizations and lower health care costs related to heart disease. While more research is needed to determine the exact nature of this connection, it is clear that avoiding or treating gum disease can be considered an important part of prevention and treatment for heart disease, as well.

You can reduce your risk of serious health complications from heart disease or gum disease. Healthy diet, regular exercise, good dental hygiene, and avoiding tobacco can all help reduce to your risk of developing one or both of these conditions. See your doctor and our dentist regularly for preventive care and treatment.

Kill the Pain, Save the Tooth

Dentist in Streeterville Chicago

Streeterville ChicagoRoot canal, or endodontic, therapy treats inflammation or infection within the pulp of a tooth. If you are awaiting your first root canal treatment, you may feel anxious or uncertain. It can be difficult to separate myth from fact when trying to learn what to expect. Here is some useful information about root canal therapy and some common misperceptions you may encounter.

Despite common belief, root canal therapy does not cause pain. Instead, it relieves the pain you are already experiencing by treating the underlying cause of the infection or inflammation. Some common reasons for tooth pulp inflammation or infection include:

  • Deep tooth decay
  • Chip or crack in tooth structure
  • Tooth root fracture
  • Periodontal (gum) disease
  • Repeated treatment on a single tooth

Once inflammation begins, the pulp experiences swelling and pressure that cause pain. If left untreated, permanent damage to the pulp can occur, including pulp tissue death. When this happens, you may experience temporary relief of pain, but it may lead to painful infection and tooth loss.

Root canal therapy is the removal of diseased or dead pulp tissue from the inside of a tooth. We use specially designed instruments that clean out the pulp chamber and root canals. Next, we disinfect the canals with special medications and clean them once more. Finally, we seal the canals to prevent re-infection. You may experience minor discomfort for a few days, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter medications.

After your root canal treatment, your tooth will need a permanent restoration to replace the lost tooth structure and protect the remaining tooth. This may be a filling or crown, depending on your need. We will discuss your restoration plan with you prior to your root canal therapy.

Whenever possible, saving your natural tooth is our goal. Root canal therapy can help to preserve your tooth. To learn more about root canal therapy or to schedule an appointment, contact our office.

Oral Health During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is an exciting time, and in the midst of this excitement your body goes through a seemingly endless array of changes.  Your teeth and gums are no exception.  Dental care often becomes the last item on your priority list as you try to maneuver through the overwhelm of preparing for your baby. However, while you are pregnant there is a greater need to be diligent about your oral health.

Many moms-to-be will experience increased mouth sensitivity when they brush and floss their teeth; including bleeding and inflamed gums.  This is perfectly normal.  Pregnancy hormones can cause gingivitis, which is the build up of plaque on your teeth. Gingivitis leads to increased tenderness of your teeth and gums. Further, hormones make your mouth more susceptible to bacteria which can also lead to bad breath.  We understand that with all that is happening during this awesome transition in your life, it’s easy to let your dental care stay on the back burner. However, as you can see, maintaining oral care is of utmost importance.

Things to keep in mind about your oral care:

  • Floss and brush regularly – Dentists recommend the use of a soft-bristled toothbrush; which is particularly important to use while your gums are uncharacteristically sensitive due to pregnancy. Be careful not to brush too aggressively. Instead, use gentle, even strokes.
  • Use mouth rinse – Mouth rinses will reduce plaque and bacteria, which protect your teeth and gums. Our dental office will be happy to recommend prenatal rinses that are effective and safe for you and baby.
  • In between brushing – If you aren’t able to brush after eating, chew sugarless gum. Sugarless gum will increase the saliva in your mouth which will help rinse your teeth.  For added benefit look for a gum that has xylitol.
  • Visit us – It’s important to stay on track with your checkups and cleanings during pregnancy. If there are any potential concerns or needed treatments, it’s always best to be aware of them as soon as possible. Our office is here to guide you on the best ways to care for your oral health while you are pregnant. We know you have a lot on your plate to get ready for your baby. Let us remove your dental health from your growing lists of concerns.

During pregnancy, most dental procedures and local anesthetics are completely safe.  However, at the beginning of your appointment be sure to inform us if you are pregnant.  We will be able to advise you of any procedures that require extra care or should be postponed until after your baby’s birth.

What You Eat Matters to Your Oral Health

$

Good eating habits aren’t just important to your physical health, but they are also important to your dental health.

Here are 4 healthy foods that will promote your beautiful smile:

  • Dairy: Low-fat milk, cheeses and yogurts are high in calcium and protein which are necessary for strong teeth.
  • Lean Proteins: Red meats should be eaten in moderation. Opt for healthier proteins such as poultry, fish, and eggs which have an abundance of phosphorus that is essential for your teeth.
  • Fruits and Vegetables: Foods high in fiber are beneficial to your teeth. Some of the easiest ways to include fiber in your diet is to eat fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables help saliva production, which allows your mouth to clean away harmful acids and particles from your teeth.
  • Nuts: Nuts are a healthy choice because they are high in protein and minerals, but low in carbohydrates. Carbs increase the acid-producing bacteria in your mouth that lead to cavities.

Limit or eliminate the following 3 foods in your diet:

  • Candies: Sugar is very damaging to your teeth. Candies have a very high consistency of sugar and they should be avoided.
  • Citrus: Although, fruits should be a part of your daily nutrition, citrus fruits are very high in acid which can cause enamel erosion.
  • Crunchy Foods: Crunchy foods such as popcorn and potato chips are filled with starchy particles that can easily get trapped between your teeth.

If you have questions about your eating habits and if they are affecting your dental health, give us a visit today! You can reach us at 312.943.6444 or contact us here.

Sincerely,

Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. For many parents this is a particularly busy time of year because their kids are returning to school. Moms and dads are faced with the challenge of creating healthy school lunches for their children that they will eat. Any parent of a picky eater knows that this can be a daunting task. When time is limited it can be tempting to buy processed foods that lack nutritional value. We’ve put together a list of healthy lunch and snack ideas that kids will want to eat that also promote good oral health.September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. We’ve put together a list of healthy lunch and snack ideas that kids will want to eat that also promote good oral health.

Foods that Are Good for Your Teeth

  • Apples and Pears are high in water content. The liquid in the fruits dilutes the effects of the sugar they contain and helps to stimulate saliva production
  • Water & Milk are better choices than juices and sports drinks, which contribute to tooth decay. If you choose to drink juices, select all natural, no sugar added drinks.
  • Cheeses & Nuts are great sources of calcium, protein, and phosphorus which strengthen the enamel on your teeth.
  •  Carrots & Broccoli are delicious raw and make a wonderful snack for school and work. These veggies are packed with essential vitamins and minerals that are great for your body and teeth.

Today, nearly 1 out of 4 kids and teens are overweight or obese. One of the factors contributing childhood obesity is feeding kids foods with little to no nutritional value. Additionally, poor diets can lead to higher risks of tooth decay and cavities, especially with children. Help your children maintain their oral health by ensuring they are fed healthy food and make sure they have regular visits with their dentist. Your Dental Benefits May Expire in December

$

Most dental insurance plans follow the calendar year, so knowing details about your insurance benefits is now more important than ever.

Use Them or Lose Them

As the year comes to a close, you may be at risk of losing your unused dental benefits. You paid the insurance company for your coverage in exchange that they provide reimbursement in accordance with your plan.  If you don’t use all of the funds available to you, the excess money goes back to the insurance company.  The unused portion isn’t refunded to you, nor does it roll into 2018.

What You Need to Know About Your Expiring Benefits

  • If your employer subsidizes your dental plan, they control the benefits allotted to you each year. As the cost of health care rises, many companies will reduce the benefits available to you in the next enrollment period.
  • If you’ve already used some of your insurance this year, chances are you paid your annual deductible. Putting off treatment until next year means you will pay for the deductible again, creating more out-of-pocket expenses.
  • If you maintain your yearly preventive care, we can identify small problems before they become a major issue that require expensive treatment. If we’ve expressed concerns about your oral health, this is a perfect time to seek treatment.  We still have appointments available in 2017.
  • Our office will be happy to let you know the amount of benefits you’ve used with us this year. However, to get a complete picture of what benefits are left always consult with your insurance directly.

Our team is available to create a plan that helps you get the treatment you need while taking full advantage of your insurance at the same time.

Connect with us online or call our office at 312.943.6444 if we can assist you in any way.

The Benefits of Composite Resin Fillings Over Amalgam Metallic Alloy Fillings

$

Cavities.  Most of us have had at least one or two at some point. There was a time when that conspicuous silver filling was a sign someone had a cavity.  Fortunately, dentists today have other options to fill tooth decay and they aren’t obvious at all.  Composite resin fillings, commonly referred to as “white” fillings, are becoming a more standard option in restorative care because of their benefits.  Repairing cavities, no longer means a mouth full of sparkling silver teeth.

Amalgam Metallic Alloy Fillings

Commonly referred to as “silver fillings”, amalgam fillings have been tested and proven to be a quality material to be used by dentist for more than a century. It continues to be utilized today. However, amalgam has its downsides:

  • Will discolor after some time causing darkening to your teeth
  • Doesn’t bond with tooth tissue, meaning the dentist will need to remove more of the tooth in order to ensure proper adhesion
  • Poorly responds to temperature fluctuations causing teeth sensitivity
  • They may expand over time, which can lead to fractured teeth

Composite Resin Fillings

In the past, white composite fillings were viewed as less durable. However, this is not considered true anymore. Composite fillings have demonstrated to have longevity and strength. Regardless of how many cavities you have, they can be repaired and your tooth damage covered with composite fillings so you can keep your beautiful smile. Here are some advantages of composite fillings:

  • They resemble your teeth because of their natural
  • The doctor removes less of the original tooth structure, so less drilling is required for the procedure
  • It bonds directly to the tooth, preventing future breaks
  • Causes less sensitivity to temperature changes

Composite fillings tend to be your best choice for aesthetic reasons. However, there are times they may not be the best decision. Your dentist might prescribe an amalgam filling because of the location or size of the tooth decay. Call our office today at (312) 943-6444 or visit us online so we can discuss your dental needs!

Sincerely,

Dr. Ramy Bahu

We often talk about the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene to ensure that your mouth is healthy. Below are some tips on how to create the right routine to maintain your beautiful teeth.

Toothpaste

Whether you’re looking for something with a specific taste, whitening agents or to help with sensitivity, rest assured that most of the toothpastes available are effective in fighting cavities.  Make sure you choose a product that also contains fluoride (not all of them do) because this will help prevent enamel decay.

Brushing

Thoroughly brush your teeth at least twice a day for about two minutes at a time.  Also be sure to brush at night before bed.  Follow these techniques for the best brushing results:

  • The bristles of the toothbrush should be at a 45-degree angle against the gums
  • Move the brush back and forth in short strokes
  • Make sure to brush the outer, inner and chewing surface of all teeth
  • Brush your tongue to remove bacteria

Toothbrush Tips

  • If using a manual brush, look for one with a small head and medium or soft bristles
  • If you are using an electric brush, choose one with an oscillating or rotating head

Your brushing technique is more important than the type of brush you use, but in some cases a specific type of brush may suit your teeth better than others.

Flossing

It’s important to floss once a day so be sure to make it part of your oral hygiene routine. Remember that flossing isn’t simply about removing stubborn food debris, but that it is important for removing plaque between teeth where a brush can’t reach.  Proper flossing technique includes:

  • Using a floss length of about 18 inches
  • Using a gentle rubbing motion slowly moving up and down
  • Curving the floss in a c shape around the tooth and gently sliding it between the gum and tooth

Taking care of your teeth and gums on a daily basis will make a huge impact on your oral health.  In addition to your own personal routine, getting professional cleanings and check-ups twice a year is necessary. Diabetes and Your Oral Health

Diabetes affects over 30 million Americans today. Most people know that living with diabetes requires special attention to your health, but did you know this includes special attention to your oral health as well?  In fact, people with diabetes are two times more likely to develop gum disease and other oral health concerns, so it is not an area to be neglected.

The first step to maintaining your oral health is a good oral hygiene routine, this includes:

  • Daily brushing and flossing
  • Regular dental check-ups
  • Controlling your blood glucose levels

People with Diabetes are more prone to some oral health concerns such as:

  • Tooth Decay – people with diabetes often suffer from dry mouth and decreased saliva production leading to an increase in the growth of bacteria. Bacteria coating the teeth can create plaque, which releases the acid causing cavities. Sugar consumption increases this risk.
  • Early Gum Disease – those with diabetes have a higher risk of early gum disease because they are more susceptible to infection. When plaque develops and isn’t removed promptly, it becomes tartar.  Tartar irritates the gum lines and causes gingivitis.  When this happens your gums become inflamed and bleed more easily.  Those with diabetes are more susceptible to gingivitis because they have a lower resistance to infection.
  • Periodontitiswhen left untreated gingivitis will spread from the gums to the soft tissue and bone structure of your teeth, this condition is called periodontitis. In addition to tooth loss and increased risk of stroke or heart attack, periodontitis can make it harder to keep your diabetes under control.

Because of the increased risk for oral health problems, it is important to be aware of warning signs for these conditions.  Check your mouth regularly and call us at 312.943.6444 or make an online appointment if you notice:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Dry mouth
  • Sore spots

How Beverages Impact Your Smile

You may have heard that coffee stains your teeth, but did you know there are several other beverages that can harm your teeth? Brush and floss all you want, but the beverages you consume may counteract your oral care.  However, on the bright side, there are drinks that can help take care of a beautiful smile.

Drinks that Promote Oral Health:

Water

  • Naturally rinses your mouth and best rids it of food debris
  • Surprisingly, tap water contains fluoride which reduces risk of cavities
  • Water also reduces the risk of dry mouth, which can increase tooth decay

Milk

  • Contains calcium and phosphates that protect tooth enamel
  • Reduces acid in the mouth such as what forms from sugary foods
  • A healthier alternative to sugary drinks

Green and Black Tea

  • The herbs in these teas contain polyphenols that attack harmful bacteria
  • Can help reduce the risk of gum disease and cavities
  • Is non-erosive, so it won’t encourage the demineralization that weakens enamel

Drinks that can be Harmful to Your Teeth:

Citrus Beverages

  • Contain high acidity that are harmful to your tooth enamel
  • Increases the risk of tooth erosion
  • Citrus drinks often have added sugar

Coffee/Espresso

  • Stains the teeth
  • High acidity levels increase bacteria and risk of gum disease
  • Hot drinks open the teeth’s pores, making them more vulnerable to damage

Soda Pop

  • Contains high acidity that will increase the chances of tooth decay and gum disease
  • The high sugar content multiplies the effects of the acidity levels

How to Minimize the Damage of Harmful Drinks:

We recognize that most people are not going to stop consuming drinks that can be harmful for our teeth.  Drinking these harmful beverages in moderation is a great start but there are some other things you can do to reduce the potential damage they cause.

Drink these beverages in one sitting rather than sipping throughout the day. After consumption, rinse your mouth with water, and brush your teeth within an hour of finishing the drink. Using a straw can also help.

Being aware of how beverages can help or harm your teeth will help you to make informed choices.  And although it’s unlikely that you will never drink coffee again, knowing how to mitigate the risks and to make better choices will help keep your mouth healthy.
