June is known as Oral Health Month in the United States. It serves to reinforce the importance of oral health, so it’s a great opportunity for us at Aesthetic & Reconstructive Dental Associates dental to remind you of ways to best care for yourself.

Healthy oral habits like flossing, brushing, and visiting us on regular basis are the basics to maintaining good oral hygiene.

Here are some other things you can do to maintain a healthy mouth:

  1. Eat a healthy diet

Good oral health starts with a healthy balanced diet. Reduce consumption of sugary food and drinks. Sugar is one of the main causes of dental problems – not to mention other health complications. Consumption of a lot of sugary and acidic food or drinks can damage your teeth and make them soft and sensitive.

  2. Avoid tobacco

Smoking or chewing tobacco can cause many dental problems, gum disease, teeth loss, and, mouth cancers. It also can affect your dental treatment results. Quitting smoking will improve your overall health and oral health as well.

  3. Examine your mouth regularly

Oral cancer is a type of cancer that can occur anywhere in your mouth. It can have invisible signs in the early stages. During your regular checkups, we will look for any abnormalities in your mouth that could be a sign of oral cancer, such as cuts, sores, bleeding gums, and swollen lymph nodes.
